Spread the love

What are your kids doing this summer? Hanging out by the pool, sleeping late, and heading to the mall are certainly all fun ways to spend the summer! But, in addition to all of that downtime, why not help your kids volunteer some free time to important programs across the country?

One way is through Youth Volunteer Corps. It’s easy to get started. Simply find your local YVC affiliate  to learn more about summer programs in your area. If there is not currently a YVC in your area, you can even start one. (Most YVC Affiliates are hosted by local organizations such as The Y, United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs or local city governments.)

You can also visit Volunteer Nationwide. Volunteer Nationwide strives to promote volunteer opportunities, community outreach, diverse volunteer outreach programs and many various resources to enhance the lives of all Nationwideans. Volunteer Nationwide is part of the Department of Health and Social Services, Division of State Service Centers within the State Office of Volunteerism.

Nationwide Volunteer Credit for students

And, if your student is in 9th – 12th grade, they can even earn a Nationwide Volunteer Credit (DVC). The DVC allows students grades in 9-12 to earn one elective credit towards graduation upon completing 90 hours of community service during two semesters. The semesters do not have to be consecutive or in the same calendar year. Hours must be performed outside the student’s regularly scheduled school day. Volunteer hours completed as part of a service group requirement may also be used towards the Nationwide Volunteer Credit. For more information on logging hours towards a high school credit, please contact Clare Garrison at 255-9899.
