STEM is an acronym standing for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The desire to keep America as one of the leading nations in technology and scientific breakthroughs has created a push toward creating STEM schools. And although our economy has been somewhat unsteady in the past few years, science and engineering jobs are growing 70% faster than other positions. That means with the proper education and training, future students will be ready to jump into the employment pool.
President Barack Obama has realized the importance of STEM education. In November 2009, he made public the kickoff of several nationwide programs to create interest and lead students toward these four areas of study. The president cited three priorities for STEM education:
1. Allowing students to think critically in the four STEM subject areas by increasing STEM literacy.
2. Assuring that American students are no longer outperformed by other nations by improving the quality of math and science instruction in the classroom.
3. Expanding STEM career opportunities and education for groups such as women and minorities.
To help reach these goals, Obama has announced partnerships that will assist American students in becoming among the best in math and science over the next 10 years. They include Time Warner Cable, Sesame Street and Discovery Communications. To add tangible excitement and challenge to STEM education, the President has also announced that there will be a new science fair held annually at the White House.
In his words, “If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House. Well, if you’re a young person and you’ve produced the best experiment or design, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.” He added, “Scientists and engineers ought to stand side by side with athletes and entertainers as role models.” Well said, Mr. President.
