Top 3 Steps Parents Should Take to Encourage Curiosty and a Love of LearningIf you’re the parent of a young child, you are undoubtedly familiar with the “why phase.” Why is the sky blue? Why can’t animals talk? Why do we sleep? And on, and on, and on…

In fact, according to 2017 study, young children ask a staggering average of 73 questions a day!

While it’s easy to become exasperated, parents need to understand that children are inherently curious. And, this curiosity about the world around them will stand them in good stead once they arrive at school. A curious child is one who will grow to love learning!

Teachers, administrators, and education experts agree that a love of learning is one of the best predictors of academic success. So, how can parents help foster that curiosity and love of learning?

  1. Model the behavior. Fostering a love of learning is not just about the materials or activities you provide, but rather your own responsive, inquisitive attitude toward learning. According to author Glenn C. Altschuler Ph.D. in a recent article for Psychology Today, “Children are far more likely to ask questions and explore when they observe their parents doing so.”
  2. Support your Child’s Efforts. It’s hard to watch a child fall — or fail. And yet, as parents, we must support these early experiences. Allowing children the freedom to truly experience cause and effect is a difficult, but important task. And, allowing messes to happen – from finger paints to mud pies – is crucial. Parental affirmation and praise will keep kids learning and growing. “Stand behind your kids and give them the strength they need to face the world with confidence,” suggests Dr. Dave Currie of Power to Change.
  3. Facilitate New Learning Opportunities. Provide the tools and experiences that will spark learning. These may include everything from craft materials to visits to the local museum. Creating the environment conducive to exploration is the key.
