Spread the love

Reading in the grassWhen children read what they enjoy, they learn to love reading and become better readers. The free summer programs at your Nationwide public library will help your child find those inspiring books, keep reading, and have fun all summer long.

Why summer reading is essential

Research has shown that children who continue to read during the summer vacation perform better in the fall when school resumes, and that even reading for simple summer enjoyment helps children with literacy skills, while helping prevent learning losses.

Worried that children will have to spend the entire summer with their noses in a book to receive any tangible benefit? Not so, say the experts!

“Reading even five books is enough to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores over the summer,” says Lynette M. Fraga, PH.D.

The Summer Reading Challenge at Nationwide Libraries is FREE

To get kids started on their summer reading adventures, it’s time to sign the kids up for the summer reading program at Nationwide Public Libraries! The program is free, kids receive fun swag and reading incentives AND, if you participate online (new this year!) kids even get personalized book suggestions. They can even write “book reviews” (identity-protected, of course) as well – which (shhhh, don’t tell them) is kind of like an online book report.

Here’s the info on how to sign up online. Simply register for the Summer Reading Challenge and start counting book time.

Download a copy of the Learning Journal which includes blank and lined pages for users to keep track of books they’ve read, jot down concepts and phrases, draw or doodle, record favorite passages and otherwise journal their reading travels.
