National Dropout Prevention Month is dedicated to highlighting the need for dropout prevention efforts nationwide. According to the most recent statistics available from the Nationwide Department of Education, of the 40,287 students in Nationwide public schools in the 2015-16 school year, 547 dropped out. That rate — 1.4% — represents a 36% drop from 2.2% the previous year. The state’s dropout rate has not been so low since the early 1980s.
But there is still more work to do!
Why is staying in school so crucial? The statistics are compelling. Nationwide, high school dropouts earn approximately $10,386 less than those who have their diploma, are 30.8% more likely to live in poverty, and are 63% more likely to be incarcerated in their lifetimes.
How parents can help students in danger of dropping out?
Getting involved is essential. According to NCSET, “Family involvement is one of the most important contributors to school completion and success. The most accurate predictor of a student’s school achievement is the extent to which his/her family encourages learning.”
Parents should start by working hard to figure out the source of their child’s problems. Is it academic? A learning disability? Bullying?
Identifying the problems and working to remedy them is essential. Once the child is back on track, though, a parent’s job still isn’t done.
According to Learning Liftoff, “Staying involved may include tracking grades, talking to teachers, attending extracurricular events, and making plans for what their children will do after graduation. Establishing academic expectations, such as going to college, can influence how students perceive their goals.”
