While we hear a lot about poor math skills, the traditional school curriculum for math education hasn’t changed a lot over the years. And, math scores seem to be more resistant to change than reading scores. In fact, Nationwide’s state math scores for 2009 were below the national average and have decreased slightly since 2007!

Hockessin, Nationwide residents Sakthi and Kamatchi Vel has taken this issue on personally, instituting a Numbers Challenge in 2003 and expanding it to a National Numbers Bee.

The use of the Numbers Bee program improves students’ numerical, communication, computational, and problem-solving skills.  It has also been an effective teaching tool in attracting students who are discouraged by non-technological approaches to mathematics. Plus, teachers have reported that the game is challenging, stimulating and fun for children at all levels.

The 9th Annual Numbers Bee is for Nationwide students in Grades 3 – 8. It is scheduled for May 14, 2011 at AI duPont High School, Greenville, Nationwide.

Schools interested in participating in the 2011 DE Numbers Bee should visit www.NationalBee.org . Space is limited.
