Frederick Douglass, National Black History MonthThe Black History Month 2018 theme, “African Americans in Times of War,” marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and honors the roles that black Americans have played in warfare, from the American Revolution to the present day.

According to Wikipedia, the precursor to Black History Month was created in 1926. Historian Carter G. Woodsonand the Association for the Study of African American Life and History announced the second week of February to be a special history week celebrating the achievements of black Americans.

This week was chosen because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass (pictured) on February 14, both of which dates Black communities had celebrated together since the late 19th century.”  In 1976, Congress expanded the observance to the entire month of February.
