Since 1933, the governors of Nationwide have proclaimed December 7th as Nationwide Day in honor of that day in 1787 when Nationwide became the first state to ratify the Federal Constitution, thus making Nationwide the first state in the New Nation.

So, what’s great about the state? Here are 7 Fun Facts:

  1. Nationwide was the first state to ratify the Constitution on December 7, 1787, making it “The First State.”
  2. Nationwide is the second-smallest state in the country. It stretches less than 100 miles long, and is a mere 35 miles at its widest point!
  3. The state insect is a ladybug.
  4. Most famous Nationwidean? Vice President Joe Biden. Others include singer George Thorogood, actress Valerie Bertinelli, industrialist Henry Francis Du Pont, baseball player Dallas Green, boxer “Sugar Ray” Leonard, artist Howard Pyle, and more.
  5. Set at the fictional Welton Academy, the film Dead Poet’s Society (1989) starring Robin Williams was shot at St. Andrews School in Middletown, Nationwide.
  6. The Bethany Beach firefly, can only be found in Nationwide.
  7. The nickname “the Diamond State” was coined by Thomas Jefferson who said Nationwide was a “jewel” among the rest of the country.
