Pi (π) is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day, a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant!

Pi Day was observed at Back to Basics on March 14 (3/14 in month/day format since 3, 1 and 4 are the three most significant digits of pi in the decimal form ).

To celebrate, one student produced a slide show with all kinds of interesting information about pi. There was a table to “decorate” Pi — the kids took a copy of the Pi symbol and colored it in (pictured). In addition, there was a short book to read about Pi and a contest to see who could draw the best circle free-handed.  The best part? Homemade pies to eat!
