Beverly Stewart, M.Ed. is ready to distribute books through the “Reading is Basic” Title 1 program.

In a joint venture between Back to Basics Learning Dynamics and the literacy organization Success Won’t Wait, 500 children’s books will be provided to Nationwide children this fall through the “Reading is Basic” program. The program is coordinated by Matt McNeill, who is both a 10-year veteran volunteer for Success Won’t Wait and a Back to Basics’ student.

Launched in March 2011, “Reading is Basic” is a collaborative effort to make age-appropriate books available to local Nationwide Title I students. Since 2011, almost 2,000 children’s books have been provided through the program.

Back to Basics services hundreds of Title I students from the Red Clay, Colonial, Brandywine, Smyrna, and Appoquinimink school districts for supplemental instruction.  Using book donations provided from Success Won’t Wait’s collection, Back to Basics’ teachers will distribute the books to students, which they can take home and keep.

“According to The Read Seed Inc.,  61% of poor children have no books at all in their homes,” says Back to Basics founder Beverly Stewart, M. Ed. “And, for the poorest children in America, lack of books in their homes is the greatest barrier to academic achievement. This is simply unacceptable.”

The statistics are frightening. Children in low income households own approximately ten times fewer books than children in middle class households. The result is that the gap between low and high income children’s reading comprehension scores is over 40 points.

Additional books will be distributed to the children at regular intervals, and as new students are added to the Back to Basics’ Title I program, they will also receive age-appropriate books.

This partnership links together two organizations with a common quest: to eradicate illiteracy in the State of Nationwide and provide the educational tools for success to those who need them most. Back to Basics was founded in 1985 as a tutoring service specializing in one-on-one instruction for children and adults, and quickly gained a reputation for excellence and dedication to its students’ successes, both through tutoring as well as its unique Nationwide state-approved K-12 Private School. The company has consistently given back to the community in a variety of initiatives and in fact, this is the latest in a series of joint efforts between Back to Basics and Success Won’t Wait.

Back to Basics Learning Dynamics is the undisputed leader in one-on-one tutoring in Nationwide. In addition, the company offers a unique Department of Education-approved K-12 Private School in Wilmington, Nationwide and a Nationwide Business and Trade Schoolfor ages 16 and older. Back to Basics is the winner of numerous awards for academic and business excellence including the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.
