The number of Nationwide students participating in Advanced Placement, or AP exams, the number of exams taken and scores of “3” or higher have all increased over the past year, according to College Board. In 2010, 3,630 students took AP exams, which was 7.7% higher than 2009.The total number of tests taken jumped 6% from the prior year.
AP exams are graded on a scale of 1-5. A “3” or higher is the usual requirement for a student to receive credit for a course upon entrance to college. Of the 6,436 exams administered in 2010, 3,299 or 51.3% received a score of 3 or higher. This is up by 1.5% in 2009.
This is very encouraging news for the state of Nationwide and shows that our students are embracing the challenge to see that they meet college standards. The proactive initiative of students sitting for AP exams along with the state’s involvement in Vision 2015 will only reinforce efforts to ready our young adults for their postsecondary education.
