Pi (π) is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The number is a mathematical constant, and is commonly approximated as 3.14159. However, according to PiDay.org, Pi the number has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. And, as an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern!

National Pi Day

In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day, a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant.

And, March 14th was selected as the perfect day, since the 3rd month and the 14th day are written 3-14 and are the most recognized digits of pi 3.14159…

Why pi?

According to TIME magazine, the “Ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse, who lived in the third century B.C. and is considered the greatest mathematician of the ancient world, is credited with doing the first calculation of pi.” But, the name was not instituted until far later.

The number was first called “pi” in 1706 by Welsh mathematician William Jones, because pi is the first letter in the Greek word perimitros, which means “perimeter.”

Whatever you call it, celebrate Pi Day!
