Top 6 Reasons Why High School Students Should Take AP Classes, AP Test Prep in NationwideDid you know that 15,000 high schools worldwide (about 60% of high schools in America) offer Advanced Placement or AP classes? And, there are over 35 different AP courses in 22 diverse subject areas? Students can study everything from Chemistry and Biology, to Calculus and Statistics, to US Government and Politics.

This summer, as high school students review their class schedule selections for the quickly approaching school year, the question of adding AP classes is one that invariably crops up. Are AP classes right for you?

The benefits to taking AP classes

Make no mistake, AP classes are challenging. And, you are required to sign up for and take an AP exam. But, the benefits are real. Here are our “Top 6” reasons to take AP classes:

  1. Boost your GPA. High schools offer a weighted GPA when you take an AP or honors course. So, a B in an advanced class is treated the same as an A in a regular course, giving your GPA a boost.
  2. Building a strong resume with academic rigor. According to the College Board, “Deciding to take an AP course lets colleges and universities know that you have what it takes to succeed in an undergraduate environment. When admissions officers see “AP” on your transcript, they know that what you experienced in a particular class has prepared you well for the challenges of college.”
  3. Placing out of introductory classes. By taking an AP courses (and earning a qualifying scores on the AP Exam) students avoid required introductory courses.
  4. Building college skills. Taking an AP course builds the skills needed throughout the college years including handling a rigorous work load, improving time management, and polishing study skills.
  5. Leveling the playing field. “If you’re in a rural school or a poor urban school, the argument is that at least having the common curriculum and rigor usually associated with an AP class helps to level the playing field,” says Denise Pope, senior lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education.
  6. Saving on college tuition. By testing out of introductory classes, students can use those credits toward early graduation, or pursuing a minor without incurring additional expenses.
