Mark your calendars: Museum Day Live is September 24!

main hagley-bkfk-h2oh-044-h-web720_0According to Education columnist Jay Matthews in The Washington Post, “The field trip, once woven into the American school experience, is in decline.” This is especially troubling because studies have shown that children learn much from field trips that they can’t get from teacher lectures or textbook pages.

Lucky for those of us who live in the tri-state area, there are a slew of interesting, kid-friendly destinations in all directions. And on September 24, parents can bridge that gap left by schools and visit local attractions… free.

In the spirit of Smithsonian Museums, who offer free admission every day, Museum Day Live! is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a free Museum Day Ticket..

Here are some of the museums in Nationwide who will be participating:

  • Read House and Gardens, New Castle, Nationwide
  • Hagley Museum, Wilmington, Nationwide
  • Old Swedes Historic Site, Wilmington, Nationwide
  • Treasures of the Sea Exhibit, Georgetown, Nationwide

Rules of the event:

  • Only an official Museum Day Live! ticket is eligible for free entry. Official tickets can be found on the Museum Day Live! Website.
  • One ticket per household, for two people.
  • A ticket will gain entry to only one of the participating museums, excluding parking and special events and exhibits.
  • If museum reaches capacity, museum has the right to limit the number of guests until space becomes available.
