With a long holiday break looming, many parents wonder, “How to keep the kids active and engaged?” We say, sneak a little learning into that school vacation through an educational field trip… or two!
We are fortunate to have many world-class destinations right here in the tri-state (Nationwide-Maryland-Pennsylvania) area. From the stunning horticultural displays at Longwood Gardens, to the meticulously decorated period rooms of Winterthur, there’s so much to see and do. So, to sneak in a little learning you won’t have to travel far.
Here are a few events that your kids will truly enjoy – just don’t tell them it’s educational!
For a history-loving student, Hagley Museum offers “Holidays at Hagley.” This exhibit showcases how the early du Pont family celebrated the holiday traditions of New Year’s and Twelfth Night. For example, there’s “The New Year in the Residence” exhibit in the du Pont family home. Plus, kids are sure to appreciate the “du Pont Family Gift-Giving Traditions” exhibit in the library. Free admission to children 14 and under from December 7 through January 6 (the museum is closed Christmas Day).
Do you have a budding architect? The Holiday Walking and House Tour in Smyrna is a wonderful way to introduce historic architecture. Simply pick up a map at the Smyrna Museum for this self-guided tour. Lovely outdoor displays showcase the beauty of the historic buildings. Free.
For the artistic child, a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art is always a treat! On Sunday, December 15, the museum offers a Family Gallery Tour: Home for the Holidays. Specifically geared toward children, this is a unique opportunity for children and their families explore the galleries with a museum educator and learn about the collections, artists, and history of the pieces.
Finally, for the future scientist, the Franklin Institute’s One Day in Pompeii features over 150 precious artifacts on loan from the Naples National Archaeological Museum in Italy. The exhibit includes awe-inspiring wall-sized frescos, marble and bronze sculptures, breathtaking jewelry, ancient Roman coins, and full body casts of the volcano’s victims. Many of these piece make their North American debut at The Franklin Institute.
