Music in Our Schools Month began as a single statewide Advocacy Day and celebration in New York in 1973, and become a month-long celebration of school music in 1985. Today, National Music in Our Schools Month recognizes the many benefits of music education in our schools, as well as the exceptional educators, students, and programs that make school music concerts and performances possible.
Why is music education so important?
Music provides far more than just simple enjoyment. It is actually proven to stimulate the brain! And, studies show that music improves all areas of academia. So, students who study music also reap a wide variety of academic rewards.
In The Benefits of Music Education, at PBS Parents, author Laura Lewis Brown explains, “Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas.” These areas include:
- language development,
- increased IQ,
- spatial-temporal skills, and
- improved test scores.
Further, research indicates that the brain of a musician works differently than that of a non-musician. According to Dr. Eric Rasmussen, chair of the Early Childhood Music Department at the Peabody Preparatory of The Johns Hopkins University, “There’s some good neuroscience research that children involved in music have larger growth of neural activity than people not in music training. When you’re a musician and you’re playing an instrument, you have to be using more of your brain.”
