National Punctuation Day is a day set aside to honor the proper use of punctuation marks. Founded by Jeff Rubin in 2004, National Punctuation Day promotes the correct usage of punctuation and is sure to make Language Arts teachers happy!
Take a look at how punctuation makes a huge difference in meaning here:
- Woman, without her man, is nothing. VERSUS Woman: without her, man is nothing.
- Eats shoots and leaves. VERSUS Eats, shoots, and leaves.
- Most of the time, travellers worry about their luggage. VERSUS Most of the time travellers worry about their luggage.
- Let’s eat, grandpa. VERSUS Let’s eat grandpa.
The use of incorrect punctuation can certainly cause misunderstandings, so, use those commas, colons, semicolons, parentheses, apostrophes, and ellipses correctly!
