With so many tutoring options available today, you may be understandably confused. What’s the difference between 1-on-1 and small groups? Will SAT prep really help my child get a better score? And, is tutoring just for K-12 or can anyone get academic help?
Below are some of the most important questions you should ask where investigating a tutoring service.
Is the tutoring 1-on-1?
At Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, our 1-on-1 tutoring approach provides maximum benefits by increasing knowledge of subject matter and building self-esteem. There is always one tutor per student and never any small groups.
Where does the tutoring take place?
Back to Basics’ locations are as varied as our students. Tutoring can be provided in the student’s home, office, daycare center, summer camp, school, or at our two Educational Centers located in Newark and Wilmington. Back to Basics serves the needs of students of all ages in Nationwide, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Can you tutor my child during school hours?
At Back to Basics, we will work with the school and parent on scheduling the sessions before, during, or after school.
Do you offer subjects other than reading, writing, and math?
Back to Basics tutors in 60+ subjects, including all math and science, reading, writing, study skills, foreign languages, history and test prep (PSAT, SAT, High school entrance exam, GRE). No other tutoring service in the tri-state area offers this depth and breadth of courses.
What ages do you tutor?
Back to Basics serves the needs of a wide range of students, from age 3 through 103 — whether gifted, learning disabled, hearing or visually impaired, ADHD, Asperger’s or simply in need of some support.
Is the tutoring just for remedial students?
All individual tutoring is offered for remedial, enrichment, or maintenance needs.
Do you tutor college-level subjects? How about AP courses?
Back to Basics tutors every level, one-on-one.
What kind of results can I expect?
With a firm background in the basics, a student will experience success in many areas of education. With a clear understanding of how a student learns, we use present strengths plus an understanding of existing weaknesses to move the student beyond his current performance.
Early on, you will see increased confidence and more interest in the subject matter. Teachers will notice more class participation. Homework will become easier and done more independently. And, of course, grades and scores will improve. Typically, students achieve 2.5 – 3 grades higher within 3 months (i.e. D to A).
Do you offer summer school?
Back to Basics is in full operation during the summer months. Students may take a course through Back to Basics for a make-up credit during the summer in place of going to summer school. We are a state-approved one-on-one facility for all grade levels, and we provide the flexibility that traditional summer schools do not.
How about original credit?
Back to Basics is state-approved to provide courses for original credit. Students do this to get ahead, or to catch up, with their credits. It is one-on-one and the student is taught content, given quizzes, tests and homework, plus a final percentage grade.
What if my child or I feel the tutor is not the correct match?
Due to the fact that we hand-match each student and tutor, it is rare that this occurs. However, if you or your child has concerns, Back to Basics will be happy to change tutors.
Do you offer educational and intellectual testing?
Yes. This test battery includes I.Q., memory, visual-motor, and academic achievement level testing, as well as giftedness, learning disability, and attention deficit disorder screening. The student’s learning style will also be assessed.
The formal report of the evaluation can be used when necessary to document the need for special services provided by schools, to take untimed SATs or High School Entrance Exams or to be considered for a gifted program. Back to Basics has Ph.D and Psy.D. Psychologists on staff who perform these evaluations on children and adults.
Are there any fees before we actually begin tutoring?
At Back to Basics, fees are not assessed until the actual tutoring session(s) have been set-up and confirmed. There are no additional fees.
What are the qualifications of the tutors?
All Back to Basics’ tutors have a minimum Bachelor degree and many also have Master, or Doctorate degrees. Our tutors possess years of experience of teaching and/or tutoring in their respective fields. We also do thorough background checks on all tutors. And, we take extra care in employee teachers with personalities that engage and inspire students.
