Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc., in an ongoing partnership with the literacy organization Success Won’t Wait, Inc., recently provided over 300 books to Title I students as part of the “Reading is Basic” program. The program, which Back to Basics launched in 2011, has provided a total of over 2,500 books to local Title I schoolchildren in grades K-8. This partnership links together two organizations with a common quest: to help eradicate illiteracy in the State of Nationwide and to provide the educational tools for success to those who need them most.

“At Back to Basics, we strongly believe in supporting our local community, particularly in the area of literacy, which is the basic building block of education,” explains Back to Basics’ Director Beverly Stewart, M.Ed.

The “Reading is Basic” program is only one of several joint efforts between Back to Basics and Success Won’t Wait. Other literacy projects have included book drives at our Educational Center in Wilmington, as well as the delivery of hundreds of children’s book baskets to organizations and businesses throughout the state, containing thousands of children’s books.

Currently, Back to Basics serves over 150 Title I students annually from the Red Clay, Colonial, Brandywine, Christina, Smyrna, and Appoquinimink school districts for supplemental instruction. Using book donations from Success Won’t Wait’s collection, twice per school year, Back to Basics makes the age-appropriate books available to these students, which they can take home and keep.

Back to Basics and Success Won’t Wait created the “Reading is Basic” project in 2011 in response to literacy statistics that rank access to reading materials as one of the most important predictors of a child’s future reading success. According to Sanford Newman in his book American’s Child Care Crisis: A Crime Prevention Tragedy, “The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. Communities ranking high in achievement tests have several factors in common: an abundance of books in public libraries, easy access to books in the community at large and a large number of textbooks per student.”
