Deborah Olatunji, a 17-year-old rising senior at Charter School of Wilmington, is releasing a book in December that offers advice to teens on how to be innovative in high school, according to a recent post on Technical.ly Nationwide.
“Unleashing Your Innovative Genius: High School Redesigned” is an advice book targeted at teens on the best ways to inspire creativity and jumpstart learning. According to the post, part one of the 200-page book, “How to conquer the classroom,” covers Olatunji’s ideas on education reform. Part two, “Retrain your mind,” discusses reframing the way students look at education and educators, and part three, “How to utilize the outside world,” encourages project-based learning and extracurricular involvement.
“My hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover that high school does not have to have a sole focus on where you will go to college,” Olatunji writes. “Rather, high school is the framework for exploration, innovation, and collaboration for your future.”
The book will be published with New Degree Press. Olatunji is funding the costs of publishing her book using Indiegogo — including professional editing, layout design, copyediting, and launching. Pre-order copies of the book are $15 for eBook and $39 for paperback
Olatunji states on the Indiegogo page, “When I pre-sell 100 copies of my book, I will publish. When I pre-sell 150 copies of my book, I will also publish an audiobook. When I pre-sell 200 copies of my book, I will publish a hardcover edition.”
Olatunji is targeting her book at high school students, but she hopes the ideas can also resonate with teachers, parents, policymakers and anyone passionate about the education system.
“You will love this book if you are about to enter high school, are in high school, or left high school feeling empty-handed,” she writes. “If you have wanted more from the traditional method of education for a long time, but haven’t quite understood how to do so then this book truly is for you.”
