With Decision Day a mere two weeks away, your college-bound son or daughter may be busy putting exciting plans in place. From roommates, to dorm decor, meal plans to course schedules, students and parents alike have many decisions to make and questions to answer.
But, here’s one truly important question you may not have thought through completely… is your child emotionally ready for college?
In a recent New York Times article, Alina Tugend explains “emotional readiness for college.” Students who are emotionally ready to leave the nest will be well-prepared for success. And, those who aren’t? They may face issues which “can lead to students’ lives’ unraveling.”
According to a recent survey of 1,500 college students conducted by the Jed Foundation, a nonprofit group that works to protect the emotional and mental health of students, the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, and the Jordan Porco Foundation, which aims to prevent suicide among students, a whopping 2 out 3 students said that they felt emotionally unprepared for college life.
If you have a son or daughter who will be leaving home for the first time this fall (or in a few years), please attend the FREE “College Preparedness from a Mental Health Perspective Workshop.” This is an open discussion, forum-style with psychotherapist Ken Brick, LCSW. Space is limited. CALL 302-594-0754 TO REGISTER.
