Being a positive influence in the community is important to Back to Basics Learning Dynamics’ Director Beverly Stewart, and a core value that she tries to impart to all Back to Basics’ tutoring and private school students. So this weekend, she stepped up to the plate to lead by example. Beverly was among the millions of volunteers nationwide to do her part to improve her local community on National Make a Difference Day, October 22.

A Board Member for the literacy organization Success Won’t Wait, Beverly spent the day volunteering at Success Won’t Wait’s Miracle of Reading Education (MORE) Used Book Drive at Salem County Community College. The event, which is sponsored by First State Robotics and Salem County Robotics to benefit Success Won’t Wait, is traditionally the organizations’ largest book drive of the year. This year’s event netted over 3,300 lbs. of books in a single day!

Not only was the event a great way for Beverly to show her students “the power of one,” hundreds of Back to Basics’ students will also benefit directly.  Many of the books that were collected during the Make a Difference Day event are destined for Beverly’s extremely popular “Reading is Basic” book giveaway program for Back to Basics’ Nationwide Title 1 students. Since its kickoff in spring 2011, the program has made over 1,000 age-appropriate children’s books available to students in need.
