Did you know that approximately 1 out of every 10 public school students in the United States right now is learning to speak English? There are nearly 5 million English Language Learners or ELLs in U.S. public education today, according to a recent article by NPR.
Of those 5 million, the vast majority (some 3.8 million) speak Spanish. But there are many other languages represented, as well, from Mandarin Chinese, to Arabic, to Vietnamese.
Pull-out vs. push-in instruction. What’s the difference?
According to the RESOL International Association, Pull-out ELL instruction means that the teacher pulls students out of the general education classroom to work in a small group setting in another room. During push-in instruction, however, an ELL teacher comes into the general education classroom to support ELs during content-area lessons.
The number of ELLs is growing in Nationwide
In Nationwide, the number of ELLs is showing a steady increase. In fact, the Nationwide Department of Education statistics cite an increase from 6.4% of the total public school population in 2015-2016, rising to 7.2% in 2016-2017.
Designing and implementing high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English Language Learners is essential to success. To learn more, a comprehensive ELL Fact Sheet is available from the Rodel Foundation.
