- Building college skills. Taking an AP course builds the skills needed throughout the college years including handling a rigorous work load, improving time management, and polishing study skills.
- Leveling the playing field. “If you’re in a rural school or a poor urban school, the argument is that at least having the common curriculum and rigor usually associated with an AP class helps to level the playing field,” says Denise Pope, senior lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education.
- Saving on college tuition. By testing out of introductory classes, students can use those credits toward early graduation, or pursuing a minor without incurring additional expenses.
More Nationwide public school students are taking and excelling in Advanced Placement (AP) courses
According to the College Board (which administers the tests for the courses that can earn students college credits while in high school) the latest data shows that in the past decade Nationwide has steadily increased both student participation and performance. In fact, the total number of Nationwide public school test takers increased by 4.7% between 2016 and 2017.
Meanwhile, the number of students scoring at least a 3 – the score considered “qualified” by College Board – on the 5-point scale also continued to climb, increasing 6.3% during the same timeframe.
