College Admissions Application Essay Writing Tips and Workshop in Wilmington, NationwideDon’t leave your college choice up to chance! The college essay is a crucial part of your admissions package… and the one piece that busy students most often overlook or rush through. What will help move your college admission application package to the top of the stack?  A well written, thoughtfully edited, interesting, and memorable essay.

Sound like a tall order? It doesn’t have to be. Here are 7 tips from the experts on how to write your best college application essay.

  1. Petersons: “Analyze the prompt thoroughly. Take three minutes to think about the prompt. If needed, divide the prompt into phrases and look at each aspect. Why would the admissions officers ask this prompt? What do you think they want to know? How does that information relate to your ability to excel in college?”
  2. USA Today: “Put yourself in the school’s position. At the end of the day, colleges want to accept someone who is going to graduate, be successful in the world and have the university associated with that success. In your essay, it is vital that you present yourself as someone who loves to learn, can think critically and has a passion for things—anything.”
  3. The College Board: “Give your essay focus by figuring out how the question relates to your personal qualities and then taking a specific angle. Make sure everything you write supports that viewpoint.”
  4. Princeton Review: “Don’t just recount—reflect! Anyone can write about how they won the big game or the summer they spent in Rome. When recalling these events, you need to give more than the play-by-play or itinerary. Describe what you learned from the experience and how it changed you.”
  5. Great College Advice: “Grab some attention. As you write your college essay, you have to consider your audience. You have to remind yourself that the poor, tired admissions officer who is reading it may have read 50 other essays in the preview nine hours. He is tired. He is cold (it’s the dead of winter and he is huddled up next to his electric space heater. He is bored stiff. So you have to do something to wake him up. Grab his attention. Make him sit up and take notice: “This essay is going to knock your socks off, buster! In order to jolt him upright in his chair, you have to hit him from the opener with some tidbit that will force him to say, “hmmm…I think essay may actually be worth reading carefully all the way through.”
  6. College Express: These are some bad college application essay #FAILs waiting to happen: Writing your application essay in a foreign language, The poem, The edgy rebel, The arts-and-crafts project, The overshare, The big picture, The sob story, and The sports-related application.
  7. Harvard College Connection: “The personal essay is the only place in your entire application where the admissions officers have the ability to hear your own voice. While a lot of applications have similar academics or extracurricular activities in them, none of them of them have you in them. So, make yourself shine out through your essay.”
