Established in 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Literacy Day is an event which focuses on reading from a global perspective. And, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the event!
International Literacy Day 2016 celebrates and honors the past five decades of national and international engagement, efforts and progress made to increase literacy rates around the world. It also addresses current challenges and looks to innovative solutions to further boost literacy in the future.
In addition, International Literacy Prizes will be awarded to people with outstanding solutions which drive literacy towards achieving the 2030 Education Agenda. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development focuses on lifelong learning opportunities with special emphasis on youth and adults.
