Design a space settlement! Space settlements are permanent communities in orbit, as opposed to a place to work for a few months and go home. Designing a space settlement involves physics, mathematics, space science, environmental science and many other disciplines. This contest is open to K-12 students throughout the world. Individuals or teams may enter. Grade levels are judged separately, except for the grand prize. A certificate will be sent to each participant.

OPTIMUS PRIME Spinoff Promotion and Research Challenge: Audience: Students in Grades 3-12, Entry Deadline: March 8, 2016

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is launching the OPTIMUS PRIME Spinoff Promotion and Research Challenge, or OPSPARC. Spinoffs are technologies originally created for space and modified into everyday products used on Earth. This year’s contest challenges students to create a multimedia poster using a new tool developed by Glogster. Winning students will be invited to Goddard to participate in a behind-the-scenes workshop, attend a VIP awards ceremony and meet actor Peter Cullen, the voice of OPTIMUS PRIME.

NASA’s Cube Quest Challenge: Audience: Higher Education Students, Registration Deadline: Ongoing

Registration now is open for NASA’s Cube Quest Challenge, advancing communication and propulsion technology for CubeSats. Competitors can win a share of $5 million in prize money and an opportunity to fly their own CubeSat to deep space. Teams can compete to be a secondary payload on the first integrated flight of NASA’s Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket, or launch themselves with an independent launch provider.
