This contest is for students in grades 6 through 12. Students in grades 6 through 8 participate in the junior division, while students in grades 9 through 12 participate in the senior division. To enter this contest, students must choose a historical topic related to the annual theme “Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History,” and then conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, museums, oral history interviews, and historic sites.
Students must present their work in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website. In the spring, students may enter their work at local, state, and national levels where it will be evaluated by professional historians and educators.
Finalists from the state contests are eligible to attend the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park in June where they will have the opportunity to win monetary awards and medals. Gold medalists receive $1000, silver medalists receive $500, and bronze medalists receive $250. The gold medal winning projects in the senior division individual and group documentary categories receive The History Channel Award of $5,000 in place of the National History Day $1,000 prize.
