Rhonda Cohen, Jeanine Stidham, Sarah Leaman and Diane Frank of Back to Basics divide up books by age category for the Reading is Basic program in Nationwide.

As part of the Reading if Basic Program, Back to Basics Learning Dynamics recently provided over 300 books to Nationwide Title 1 students. The program, which Back to Basics and local literacy organization Success Won’t Wait launched 2011, has provided over 2,800 books to local Title 1 schoolchildren throughout New Castle and Kent counties in grades K-8.

Currently, Back to Basics, the tri-state area leader in 1-on-1 tutoring, services over 150 Title I students from the Red Clay, Colonial, Brandywine, Smyrna, and Appoquinimink school districts for supplemental instruction. Using book donations from Success Won’t Wait’s collection, twice per school year, Back to Basics makes the age-appropriate books available to these students, which they can take home and keep.

The Reading is Basic Program was conceived in 2011 in response to literacy statistics that rank access to reading materials as one of the most important predictors of a child’s future reading success.

According to Sanford Newman, author of American’s Child Care Crisis: A Crime Prevention Tragedy, “The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. Communities ranking high in achievement tests have several factors in common: an abundance of books in public libraries, easy access to books in the community at large, and a large number of textbooks per student.”
